How The Beauty Standards Of Ideal Lips Have Changed Throughout Decades

The internet, media, and the society have set unreachable beauty standards for women to follow. Subconsciously, a lot of women are victims of the milestones set for them to reach when it comes to beauty. Even though we became inherently more intelligent as species, especially after this massive technology development; we are still very primitive when it comes to understanding and accepting how all this it’s playing with our minds.

Us women are surrounded by signals all around, telling them how they should look, speak, behave and so on. Then, of course, we are going to have troubles finding ourselves pretty enough, good-looking enough, having this and that enough… I mean… just enough of that! Time to take notice: Beauty standards are temporary. Just like anything else in this life.

Today, we will take a look at how much beauty standards for women have changed throughout the time when it comes to the ideal lips. A specific curve of the lip could have been considered hot around ten or one hundred years ago, but now it’s not. Ten years from now, that curve can still be trendy. Maybe full lips are not going to be admired the same way. Thin lips can get trendy. We never know. Only time knows. That’s why we should start thinking of unchaining ourselves from these kinds of expectations and start loving our bodies and face more just like they are. Loving yourself is the most important love you’ll receive and give. So, start from now to get more comfortable in your own skin and don’t allow the outside pressures define who you are.

Below we are going to list for you facts of how beauty standards have changed and altered throughout the decades. Try reminding yourself that if you keep following them it is like following a rainbow. You see it, it seduces you but what when it comes to possessing it? It’s a neverending journey.

There was a study made, which took in consideration 353 images of models appearing in Vogue magazine, between 1960 and 2011, with the purpose to analyze the lips of fashion models. In these images the model’s face had the following characteristics: It spanned at least one-third the height of the page, the model’s lips were “at rest” — in other words, the model wasn’t smiling or pouting, for example — and the lip shape wasn’t altered with makeup.

Findings tell that from 1960 to 2011, neither the upper nor the lower lip increased in size over time, and the ratio of upper-lip size to lower-lip size also didn’t change. The average upper-lip to lower-lip ratio was 0.68, which corresponds to a 47 percent larger lower lip compared to the upper lip, the researchers added.

But the standard going back and forth, from thin to full is something which history can witness too, for example, if we take in consideration women’s faces appearing in famous paintings throughout time. The right question for this decade when it comes to the ideal lips would be: Can they get any fuller? Everyone is obsessed with having big full lips. Women are investing thousands in plastic surgeries only to meet the standard. Kim Kardashian is the icon face as we all know.

1990

This is the period of time where the full lips started getting really trendy. Broad, big and expressive mouths were the thing. In the beauty department, lips were supposed to be full with a deep red lipstick or frosted with a pencil outline. Julia Roberts was undoubtedly the mouth of the ’90s.

1980

Thickness and definition are what characterized the 80s. Massive lips were not the spotlight. Teeth and smile were. Heather Locklear was the face representing best the thin, healthy look.

1970

Susan Dey is the one to make big lips the intense fashion of the 70s. During the 1970’s women worshipped a tanned, athletic, and natural look. Shiny clear glosses or pink and nude pearl lipsticks coat the lips.

1960

Twiggy is the icon representing the 60’s. She was a British cultural icon and a prominent teenage model in swinging sixties London. During these years, lines and shapes are more important than the volume of the lips.

1950

Symmetry was quite the thing of the 50’s. A very symmetrical mouth that was broader and more defined than ever before became trendy. This is the period when bottom lip hit the pedestal.

We could continue going on and on in retrograde, to show you how much these beauty standards of the ideal lips changed and along with them the perception of beauty itself. Beauty is not something society should determine. If you feel like you like some specific part of the body, it shouldn’t matter to you if the society percepts it as less attractive or not hot. Everybody has a different view of the world. Everybody has their uniqueness and special traits. Full, thin, medium lips or whatever, are not going to help you be and feel more attractive if you forget to work in your personal growth and fight your insecurities. Dig deeper into what real beauty really is, and find the unique viewpoint for yourself.
