If women had to choose their most painful experiences in life, it would probably be childbirth, if they’ve gone through it. Yet, surprizingly for this woman from El Paso in Texas, childbirth is an event to take smiling selfies. Kat Armendariz, instead of holding her sister’s hand while she was in pain, decided to take a selfie with her. 27-year-old mother-of-five saw the ‘funny side’, and took out her phone to take this ‘ultimate selfie’. She is seen smiling from ear to ear while her sister is crying in pain, covering her eyes in anguish in the background. The picture went viral, and the reactions were divided.
Kat Armendariz, 27, captured the moment on June 29 just after 3 a.m. as her 20-year-old sister, Kimberly, was howling in pain while giving birth.
“I warned her that I wanted to take a selfie while she was in pain because I did my time already.”
The new aunt Kat uploaded the shot to Imgur, captioning it “SELFIE! While my sister is about to shove a baby out her vag!” The image was shared over 560,000 times and has more than 1000 comments now.
Kimberly had been in labor for 15 hours inside Sierra Providence East Medical Center in El Paso before giving birth to her first child, a boy named Zayden.
“I didn’t know what I was going to feel, but at that moment, she got it right on time,” Kimberly said of her sister’s photo.
Kat received tons of backlash after posting the selfie, although her sister Kimberly admitted she found it funny.
Many people agreed that the photo was hilarious, however a bit “cruel and funny”. One said: “She’s gonna hate you for this later.” Another one commented: “If someone took my picture while I was in labour, I would make a point of keeping my placenta just so I could throw it at them.” Nice!
Speaking to Mashable, Kat said:
“She wasn’t in too much pain at first, so she thought it was pretty funny. I told her I was going to do it. She just started the oxytocin and the labor pains began almost instantly.”
What are sisters for, if not to get at your must vulnerable and show the world?
