New Zealand Tourist Dies After Being Hit By Jet Blast At Famous Caribbean Beach

Beach life is the best. You go to the beach, enjoy the sunshine because you can easily cool off, and lay down carelessly all day long. Until a jet plane takes off, and you are blown away by its power. Maho beach is a famous place for holiday goers on the Dutch Carribean territory island of Sint Maarten, where the runway is too close for the safety of the beachgoers. Except, for those who seek adventure and danger. Sadly, a 57-year-old woman died after she was blown over by a jet blast and hit her head on this beach.

A local official said that the thrill-seeker was standing near a fence when she was knocked over by the blast from a departing plane. The area is a popular tourist spot, but is also in close proximity to the airport. Hundreds gather each day to feel the full force of jet engines as they land or take off. Yet, sadly, this is sometimes very dangerous, with the strong blasts capable of knocking people off their feet.

An onlooker captured footage showing a volunteer attempting to resuscitate the woman. The woman, who has not been identified, was taken to Sint Maarten Medical Center, where she was pronounced dead.

Roland Brison, director of tourism for the island, said the woman was from New Zealand. He told the New Zealand Herald: “At this time I only wish to express my deepest sympathy to the family and loved ones while we continue to investigate what transpired just hours ago.”

The victim was holding onto the fence when a Boeing 737 took off for Trinidad on Wednesday. She and others were blown backwards, which caused her to fall and hit her head on the pavement.

Aviation experts, such as Peter Clarke, have warned of the dangers every year of tourists being blown over by the force.

He told the newspaper: “People know the dangers. It would pick you up like a piece of paper.”

People on social media started questioning who allowed tourists to stand so close.

The beach also has its own webcam with a focused sight on the airport, so, if you want to watch a jet plane coming into land, there’s a safer way to do it.
