It seems like love makes us do strange things. But, sometimes, the ones we trust the most can betray us in the worst possible way. Loren Bunner, 22, of Vincent, Alabama, Jolee Callan’s ex-boyfriend, had an idea to have a hike with her at the Pinhoti Trail in the US state on August 30, 2015. He even posted a few photos of Jolee while they were hiking on his Instagram account. Many people take it to social media to say goodbye to the world, but this man had something else planned. Callan later called the police and turned himself in for murdering his ex-girlfriend. While the photos still haunt the public, Bunner was sentenced to 52 years of prison for murdering his 18-year-old ex-girlfriend.
The first photo of Jolee was when she was sitting in the car with Bunner’s dog, with others of her on the walk. The last pictures of the teen captured her taking a photo and looking out over the clifftop. It was captioned “oh, ya know. Just enjoying the view” and “oh, @joleeisakitten the photographer”.
After committing the murder, Bunner called the cops and said: “I want to turn myself in for the murder of my ex-girlfriend that happened just a little while ago on Cheaha Mountain.” It was only later in the evening that the police found her body, still wearing her backpack. He took the photos moments before he shot her twice in the head and pushed her off a cliff.
Bunner told investigators the couple had entered a suicide pact where he would shoot her and then kill himself but could not go through with it. He eventually pleaded guilty in July nearly two years after her murder. Interestingly, Bunner was originally to be tried as a youthful offender, where the maximum sentence would have lasted just three years. However, that decision was reversed in December, which meant that the killer would be tried as an adult. Then, he was sentenced to 52 years in jail.
What Banner claimed was that he cold-heartedly shot Jolee in the back of the head so she ‘wouldn’t see it coming’. But, according to Clay County Web, that was proven false.
In fact, her autopsy proved that Jolee had been shot not only once in the back of the head, but at point-blank between the eyes, before Bunner threw her body off the cliff.
The District Attorney, upon sentencing Bunner, said:
“There are three cases of homicidal violence in this case. First, he lured her to the mountains for a symbolic hike, and then he shoots her in the back of the head. Then, he flips her over and shoots her point-blank between the eyes, I think, because he wanted to look at her in the eyes, if she was still alive. Then, he drags her body to the edge of the cliff and throws her 40 feet off the cliff. Not to mention, two days before the murder, he tried to take Jolee’s new boyfriend out by soliciting a friend to kill him.”
Jolee’s father, Michael, described his daughter as a ‘great kid, who never got into any trouble’. According to Clay County Web, he said:
“I never had to spank her. Everyone who knew Jolee liked her. She had lots of friends and dearly loved animals. We had a great father/daughter relationship. [Bunner] played video games a lot, was quiet and kind of controlling. They pretty much did whatever he wanted to do. He said he got the same texts and had the same conversations that Davidson talked about. She would tell me about him threatening suicide, and I tried to tell her to move on. She was always helping others.”
