While driving through her hometown of Gulfport, Mississippi, Jessica Pittman noticed an old man and his wife standing beside their SUV parked to one side of the road. This seemed a little bit strange to Jessica so she pulled up and started a conversation.
Kenneth Smith and his wife were selling wood to help pay her medical bills. Helen was diagnosed with lung cancer and of course her husband would try to help her with money. He was selling the kindling for $5 a bag.
Later that year, Jessica spotted Kenneth selling wood but there was no Helen. She had passed away.
Even though his wife had died, he was still out there for hours, trying to pay her medical bills.
Moved by this gesture, Jessica shared this on Facebook to help him raise the money.
“If y’all need any kindling wood please come buy from this precious 80 year old elderly man. His name is Kenneth. He parks on the corner of Carl leggett and west Taylor Rd. In Gulfport Right near bayou bluff. He is there every day for hours. Selling for $5 a bag.
Background story: Last year he was there selling as well but he had his sweet little wife Helen with him. He was selling to help pay for his wife’s doctor visits and bills. This year he is alone.”
