2017, the year where 13-year-old girls appearing on the Dr. Phil show and Turkish chefs seasoning meat spawn omnipresent memes. Also the year when the 45th President of the United States tweets about his political updates, and the year when a former White House photographer trolls Trump on his Instagram.
Pete Souza brought White House photography to the modern age by updating the public about the President’s life through social media channels.
Now, the 62-year-old is taking a few jabs at the new President.
He photographed Reagan, and the Obamas, confessing his political leanings are democratic, but he has ‘always looked at this job as documenting for history. It was never about politics’.
Souza was equally as sad as the public to see Obama leave the chair, and he has been expressing his grief through subtle captions and photography ever since then.
On the day that the world learned of Trump’s discriminatory ‘Muslim ban’, which would stop Muslims from several countries entering the USA,, Souza simply posted a photo of Barack Obama ‘talking with a young refugee’ wearing a headscarf.
No dig was necessary, as the photo clearly illustrated the differences between the two heads of state.
Then Souza made a more bold statement when it came to gender…
He posted a photo of Obama meeting with his top advisors, all of them women.
Pete said ‘I guess you’d say I was trying to make a point’ – aimed at Trump’s choice of team which is hugely dominated by white males.
CNN described Souza’s recent photo series as ‘A silent, social media, shade-throwing protest told in visuals’ – and the public have responded by commenting things like ‘More shade! Awesome!’ on his photos.
Two more jabs were also posted, featuring Obama enjoying a tequila with the Mexican president, Enrique Peña Nieto, and being pally with the Australian leader Malcolm Turnbull, both of those being responses to leaks that Trump belittled both of them over the phone.
One of Souza’s more significant posts is the one relating to the lights in the Oval office…

This is actually a jab after reports had revealed that Trump and his advisors had to have their meeting in the dark, because they couldn’t find the light switches in the cabinet room.
With a serious level of sass, Pete posted a photo simply captioned ‘Merrick Garland. Just Saying’.
This was a nod at Obama’s failed Supreme Court nominee who was not given a hearing by congress before Donald took office, the Washington Post reports.
Pete also got the world to reminisce about a little boy called Alex who wrote to Obama to rescue an injured child in Syria (Syria being one of the countries blacklisted by Trump)
Remember Alex, the six-year-old boy who wrote President Obama a letter about the Syrian boy photographed in the ambulance. Alex visited the Oval Office with his family the day after the election. “Dear President Obama, Remember the boy who was picked up by the ambulance in Syria? Can you please go get him and bring him to [my home]? Park in the driveway or on the street and we will be waiting for you guys with flags, flowers, and balloons. We will give him a family and he will be our brother. Catherine, my little sister, will be collecting butterflies and fireflies for him. In my school, I have a friend from Syria, Omar, and I will introduce him to Omar. We can all play together. We can invite him to birthday parties and he will teach us another language. We can teach him English too, just like my friend Aoto from Japan. Please tell him that his brother will be Alex who is a very kind boy, just like him. Since he won’t bring toys and doesn’t have toys Catherine will share her big blue stripy white bunny. And I will share my bike and I will teach him how to ride it. I will teach him additions and subtractions in math. And he [can] smell Catherine’s lip gloss penguin which is green. She doesn’t let anyone touch it. Thank you very much! I can’t wait for you to come! Alex 6 years old “
A lot of his followers thank Souza for sharing these photos and subtly jabbing at Trump’s decision while still showing off how compassionate Obama was.
Some of his captions are a bit more cryptic…
He wrote ‘Rock, paper, scissors. Might be worth a try.’ and showed Obama playing the classic game with a child.
Due to his wealth of historical photos, he is in the best position possible to post satirical content.
