Noel Cruz, an American-Filipino artist, is quickly making a name for himself as a master of dollmaking and earning a good living in the process. Cruz takes generic-made dolls of famous television and movie characters and breathes somewhat resembling a soul inside of them. He also uses Barbie and Ken dolls as a foundation to create famous effigies of musicians, royals and politicians. He initially came to prominence when he remade Disney Store’s very own take on Belle from the Beauty and the Beast to uncannily resemble Emma Watson, before selling the doll in an online auction.
He has since repeated that feat with numerous characters from cartoons, television shows and movies. A Katniss Everdeen Hunger Games doll Cruz painstakingly remade to closely resemble Jennifer Lawrence sold on eBay for $2,500, while others have gone for as low as $500 and as high as $3,500.
“Careful attention has been given to replicate the nuances of her features,” Cruz wrote in a description on eBay for one of his products, whose bodies he also reworks to appear more realistic. Here is a selection of some of the Philippines-born artist’s best works.
