A lot of us struggle to make our hair into a ponytail, while this artist is sculpting her hair into speechless masterpieces. Laetitia KY is a fashion designer and describes herself as an art addict from the Ivory Coast in Africa. Lately she revealed a series of Instagram pictures featuring her hair in the most wildest designs by mimicking hand poses and other movements.
In one image her hair looks like a second set of arms strumming a guitar. But her work is more than just a cool hairstyle, it’s a powerful form of expression. Laetitia says for A Plus in an email that a Black woman’s hair has been looked as “not pretty enough” for a long time now.
“And with the return of natural hair to the Black community, hairstyles [have] become a beauty asset, a way of self-affirmation and [a] claim of its beauty. To use [these] hairstyles as means of expression is, therefore, [powerful] because it speaks to all its Black women who have had, for a long time, made believe that their hair was not dope enough,” she says.
When asked about what inspired her to sculpt her hair into hands she said that it was another Instagram photo series she saw a year ago. There were different hairstyles that women wore in African tribes.
“These were really impressive and artistic. And it made me want to use the hairstyle as one of my means of expression,” she said.
She has now reached 13,000 Instagram followers. Ky says that art is not the only way to express herself and also wishes to open her own clothing line soon.
“I have enormous passion, and I intend to express myself on several levels in the future,” she adds.
