You probably think wearing the wrong makeup is a scary and dangerous prospect, but you surely never thought that it could mean bodily harm. Well, it turns out that’s exactly what it meant for mother-of-two Erica Diaz, who had to have her eye removed as a result of a piece of glitter.
During a routine cleanup after working on a craft project with her daughter, a small speck of glitter accidentally got in Diaz’s eye. The piece of glitter had cut the cornea and ended up getting infected, the infection quickly spread throughout her eye. This resulted in a complete loss of eyesight in that eye.
After undergoing two unsuccessful cornea transplants, injections, drops, and antibiotics, Diaz was in danger of contracting sepsis, leaving doctors no choice but to remove her eye. The mother, who told her story by documenting the entire process on Imgur, now has a prosthetic eye in its place.
“There was a chance that a f*cking piece of glitter in my eye could actually kill me,” Diaz wrote on Imgur. “I beg you, PLEASE wear eye protection when dealing with glitter.”
The grueling treatment procedure during the attempt to save the eye which involved strong chemicals also produced side effects like the loss of hair, eyebrows and eyelashes. To add insult to injury, Diaz’s medical insurance company has refused to cover the bill for the procedures, claiming having her eye removed was a ‘cosmetic preference’ instead of a medical necessity.
Luckily, the mother gets by with a little help of her friends, one of whom set up a GoFundMe page to cover the excessive medical bills, which has so far raised almost $5,000.
“While all of that is going on, I’m still happy and living life and doing my thing,” Diaz says.
