How To Make DIY Glow In The Dark Nail Polish

nails

You’ve probably seen the phrase “glow-in-the-dark” plastered on a lot of different commercial products.

Well, that’s just a marketing name given to phosphorescence.  It’s is a specific type of photoluminescence related to fluorescence.

In simple terms, phosphorescence is a process in which energy absorbed by a substance is released relatively slowly in the form of light.

This is in some cases the mechanism used for “glow-in-the-dark” materials which are “charged” by exposure to light. Unlike the relatively swift reactions in fluorescence, such as those seen in a common fluorescent tube, phosphorescent materials “store” absorbed energy for a longer time, as the processes required to re-emit energy occur less often.

Of course, that was just a scientific explanation of what glowing in the dark actually is. While it’s worth a read for your next chemistry project, we’re not here to explain how nerdy things work.

So instead, here’s how to make glow-in-the-dark nail polish!
