The focus of the public eye is especially sharp when it comes to the lives of celebrities, but in many cases, that hasn’t been a good enough reason to keep up a clean act. While most celebrity arrests have been done on fairly benign grounds, there are some who have shattered their lives with their actions and have landed themselves in jail for a very long time. Here are fifteen times famous people shockingly ended up in hot water and the deeds which preceded it.
1. Bobby Shmurda
The Brooklyn rapper was arrested in 2014 on weapons, drugs, and assault charges and sentenced to seven years in jail last year. He reportedly took a plea deal that significantly reduced his sentence, but wasn’t satisfied with the term, stating, “I was forced to take this sentence, I did not want to take this sentence.”
2. Joe Giudice
In September 2015, Joe and Teresa Giudice were sentenced to prison for various counts of mail, wire, and bankruptcy fraud. Joe hadn’t been filing tax returns between 2004 and 2008 and began his prison term at New Jersey’s Fort Dix Federal Correctional Institution in March 2016.
True to his name, C-Murder was sentenced to life in prison for killing a teenager during a scuffle in 2002. C-Murder got into a fight with a 16-year-old fan named Steve Thomas outside a club in Harvey, Louisiana which ended tragically. Following a civil case in 2013, the New Orleans-born rapper was also ordered to pay the victim’s family more than $1.1 million.
4. Apollo Nida
Real Housewives of Atlanta star Phaedra Parks’ estranged husband, Apollo Nida, is currently serving an eight-year sentence on mail, wire, and bank fraud charges. Originally facing a sentence upwards of 30 years, its length was reportedly lessened due to his cooperation with investigators.
5. Jared Fogle
Former Subway spokesperson Jared Fogle was sentenced to 15 years and eight months in prison for child pornography and sex with minors charges in 2015. Prison life reportedly hasn’t been easy for the “Subway Guy”. In March 2017, he was beaten by a fellow inmate. The assailant, Steve Nigg, wrote a letter explaining that he beat up Fogle because the spokesman was allegedly treated like a “hero” amongst other molesters and used bodyguards to protect himself.
6. Abby Lee Miller
Reality television star Abby Lee Miller pleaded guilty and was sentenced to 366 days in prison for bankruptcy fraud and for smuggling in $120,000 in Australian cash without disclosing it in May 2017.
7. Suge Knight
Former music mogul Suge Knight was charged with murder and attempted murder in February 2015, following a fatal hit-and-run on the set of the hit film Straight Outta Compton. The much-anticipated trial, which could leave Knight in jail for the remainder of his life, is scheduled to begin in January 2018.
8. Jeremy Jackson
Former Baywatch star Jeremy Jackson was arrested in April 2015 for allegedly stabbing a man in Los Angeles. In April 2017, Jackson accepted a plea deal that includes spending 161 days in prison and attending anger management classes.
9. Ricardo Medina
This year, Power Rangers Samurai star Ricardo Medina pleaded guilty to fatally stabbing his roommate, Josh Sutter, with a samurai sword in 2015. The plea deal resulted in a six-year sentence instead of a potential life sentence.
10. Sam Hurd
Former pro-footballer Sam Hurd was touted to become one of NFL’s most prized and respected players, but he ended up serving 15 years behind bars for his role in a drug-distribution hustle instead. In 2015, Hurd filed a motion to have his sentence reduced from 15 years to nine.
11. Phil Spector
Legendary music producer Phil Spector will possibly spend the rest of his life behind bars for the death of actress Lana Clarkson. The 77-year-old was sentenced to 19 years to life behind bars on second-degree murder charges and ordered to pay the victim’s funeral costs in 2009. He will be 88-years-old before becoming eligible for parole.
12. Shelley Malil
Best known for his work in The 40-Year-Old Virgin, Shelley Malil was sentenced to life in prison for the attempted murder of his girlfriend in 2008.
13. Oscar Pistorius
In the early hours of February 14th, 2013, the former Paralympic champion reportedly fired four shots into a closed bathroom door, killing girlfriend Reeva Steenkamp. Pistorius was convicted of manslaughter in 2014 and sentenced to five years in prison. After serving one year he was put on house arrest, but his conviction was overturned and upgraded to murder by a higher court in 2015. Pistorius was sentenced to six years following the new verdict.
14. Rae Carruth
In 2001, the former Carolina Panthers star Rae Carruth allegedly wanted to kill his on-and-off girlfriend because she was eight months pregnant with his child and he didn’t want to pay child support, hiring a hit man to pull the trigger. The footballer was sentenced to 18 years and 11 months in prison.
15. Rod Blagojevich
Former Illinois Governor Rod Blagojevich was convicted of abusing his power in 2011 and sentenced to 14 years behind bars after he was accused of trying to sell Barack Obama’s U.S. Senate seat after Obama won the 2008 presidential election.
