An Editorial With A ‘Cat Eye Syndrome’ Model Has Stunned The Fashion World

Caitin Stickels, an actress and singer from Seattle, Washington has hit the headlines after she starred in a shoot for V magazine recently. The 29-year old was born with Schmid-Fraccaro, or Cat Eye Syndrome, an extremely rare condition which can cause facial disfigurement and split pupils which manifest itself through a cat-like appearance.

The chromosome-caused condition which appears once in every 50,000 to 150,000 births has so far been virtually unrepresented in a fashion world which strives to be more open, inclusive and realistic. In that spirit, the stunning Stickles was offered a photo shoot with world-renowned photographer Nick Knight.

The powerful editorial has turned many eyes in the Seattleite’s direction as the 33,200 followers on her Instagram account can attest. The attention is a just reward for a person who has long been an advocate for inclusivity and says she’s now even more determined on following her artistic dreams.

In her profile with V Magazine, Caitlin admits, “Working with Nick Knight at SHOWstudio for V Magazine was something I couldn’t have even dreamed of, to be perfectly honest.”

“I never dreamed of being a model or being a part of the fashion industry,” she continues.

“I always admired from afar and meanwhile tried to recreate my own expressions through fashion, photography, and art… This collaboration has been the most beautiful whirlwind of my life.”

Stickels was impressed beyond words with the results of her collaboration with Nick Knight.

“I did expect to see something epic — and they went far and beyond what I could have imagined. I don’t want to say that this was my dream come true, because I think working with Nick Knight is anyone’s dream that I never dared to actually have myself… he and V magazine have opened eyes, they opened minds, and they gave this world a chance. They both have done the same with me and I’m still processing that it’s now my reality, too. ”

Although it might not seem the case, the shoot was Stickels first attempt at modeling

“I always admired brilliant artists with miraculously creative minds, especially in the fashion industry where being human isn’t often expected to be accepted or displayed in an artistic way,” Caitlin says in the article accompanying the V editorial.

This dynamic shot is really beautiful as well!

“However, by using the easily accessible foundation of fashion, those who would take that risk, the ones who could sense the story in an article of clothing and find the proper voice to share it with, those were people I always looked up to as inspiration for my own aspirations in reaching out to the world. Even if it’s through the beauty of fashion, it’s still to expose the authenticity of humanity all the while,” she concluded, proving that she is truly a poet at heart.

According to Cosmopolitan, Stickels was discovered via Instagram by Nick Knight himself, who was trying to find fresh talent for his photo shoots.

When asked her about her life before modeling and how it had changed, Caitlin replied:

“I was content being small in my small world doing the art that I do — and they took me to Cloud 9 instead.”
