The 32-year-old U.S professional tennis player, Bethanie Lynn Mattek-Sands, suffered a tragic injury on Thursday, July 6. This happened after she fell in a heap on the floor of court seventeen, screaming ‘please help me’. Doctors then treated her for 20 minutes after her knee buckled in the third set of her second-round singles match. Her opponent Sorana Cirstea immediately stepped over the net to help her opponent but was obviously shocked at the injury.
At first, no one noticed how severe the injury was, until she began to shout for help, and after her opponent waved for help. Mattek-Sands’ doubles partner, Lucie Safarova, was beside the court looking very worried for her and visibly distressed by the injury, reported Metro.
@WTA_insider reports that it is an acute knee injury and she went straight to hospital.

She was due to compete in the women’s doubles competition with Lucie Safarova, after she won both the Australian Open and the French Open this year. After the incident, doctors confirmed that she dislocated her right patella and ruptured her patellar tendon. The injury will require surgery.
“I will get through this and I will get back out there,” she said for the BBC on Sunday. Mattek-Sands said she will fly to New York on Sunday to seek further medical advice.
“I remember my knee feeling tight and I took a look at it and something was wrong. It was one of the most painful injuries I’ve had, and I’ve had a few.”
Mattek-Sands thanked fans for their messages of support, and praised her opponent, Sorana Cirstea on social media. Romanian Cirstea comforted Mattek-Sands as she lay on the court, alongside her doubles partner Lucie Safarova and Mattek-Sand’s husband, Justin.
“I remember Sorana talking to me and telling me it’s going to be OK and I think that’s amazing. We’re all competitors on tour and yet some of these girls are my friends and in that moment, she was there as my friend, no matter that we’re in the middle of a match. It means a lot to me.”
And guess who came to visit her in the hospital? Sorana Cirstea and Sania Mirza, who were her American’s doubles partner in Brisbane earlier this year. Hopefully, she will recover soon!
