This Is Why Tennis Players Are Sniffing New Tennis Balls At Wimbledon

At this year’s Wimbledon competition, tennis stars are indulging in a strange new craze since they’re sniffing their balls. Before any dirty thoughts, take hold we’ll continue. The players are actually sniffing the brand new tennis balls when they’re given them.

This was started by Dominika Cibulkova who is the women’s tennis world No.9, she has been spotted getting a noseful of that new ball smell a lot of times while being on court.

She is such an avid sniffer that she can immediately identify where different tennis balls came from, by just smelling them. At last year’s competition, she identified several balls to the tournament where they were used originally while blindfolded.

Some people speculated that she sniffs the balls for luck but she denied this by claiming that she just likes the smell of the tennis balls, which is fair enough.

Cibulkova is not the only tennis ace to be smelling her balls, Jamie Murray has also been spotted giving them a good whiff. Just on Friday, he held three balls in one hand before sniffing them for good luck. What do you call it? Superstition? Habit? But we can’t argue with them, if they take a trophy at the end.
