“For this was on St. Valentine’s Day, when every bride cometh there to choose his mate”
This quote is by the ‘Father of English literature’ Geoffrey Chaucer and was published in 1382. It is considered the first recorded association of the day of Saint Valentine with romantic love.
However, it was only in XVIII century England that lovers started expressing romantic feelings through greeting cards known as “valentines”. The real boom of this tradition can be traced back to 1840 when the invention of the postal stamp made mailing more affordable. It is reported that 400,000 valentines were sent the first year after this postal reform.
