Whenever life goes wrong, we suddenly get these epiphanies about the importance of small moments. We suddenly realize that nothing matters when you are not healthy or when your loved ones are at risk. We start to see beauty in other unimaginable things and we might as well become creative, too. This 3-year-old girl’s distraction project went viral, but the meaning behind it is very special. Scout is a three-year-old girl whose grandma, her Nonnie, was diagnosed with breast cancer. The poor girl had to witness the hair loss of her granny and the family decided they should all do something to keep her mind busy. That’s how this photo project began.
Nonnie was diagnosed with breast cancer in April 2016 and had 6 rounds of intense chemo from June to September the same year. Scout became very concerned about her grandma, and her mother decided to teach her about women’s strength and fights in life. Therefore, they made a list of famous people and she taught her daughter about them a little. Then, they chose photos to replicate together. The project went on for almost a year, throughout the diagnosis, treatment, and the final double mastectomy surgery.
Scout became very interested about how amazing these women are. They kept on shooting and planned a picture book for both Scout and Nonnie. Ellen was one of Nonnie’s favorite, too. After it finished, they showed it to Nonnie, and she was absolutely amazed.
This project has taught Scout a lot about how strong women can be and that they are not as delicate anymore. Nonnie is now cancer free and got in some of the photos, too.
