1. No Easy Breaks
1993’s British drama fantasy The Secret Garden is still one of the most beloved movies among children, be it toddlers or early adolescents. Kirsten auditioned for the part but was turned down. This was quite disheartening for the young Dunst. (Elijah Wood was turned down too when he auditioned for the role of Colin.)
“I auditioned for The Secret Garden. When I didn’t get that, I was sobbing on the floor. When other people want something for you so badly and you’re young, you want it so badly too. I was crying because you feel like you’ve let your mom down.” she recalls.
3. Best Role
In an interview in 2002, Kirsten said that her favorite movie that she ever starred in was The Virgin Suicides.
4. Famous Friends
I remember learning to drive with my father first before I officially took classes with an instructor. However, famous people flock around famous people, so Kirsten was taught how to drive by George Clooney!
“George Clooney taught me to drive,” she said. “He showed me how in a golf cart on the set [of ER]. I can tell you he is the best, as gorgeous in real life as he looks on screen.”
5. Feline Friends?
One thing that Dunst would take to an abandoned island, or if she was to appear on Survivor is her cat. “My cat, because he’s fun to play with, he’d entertain me, and I could eat him if I was really hungry.”
6. Right to Choose
She once turned down a part since it required that she gain weight. That was the role of Chrissy in 1995 Now and Then.
7. The Line
She also turned down the role of American Beauty’s Angela. The now iconic role was portrayed by Mena Suvari.
Her reason for it?
“When I read it, I was 15 and I don’t think I was mature enough to understand the script’s material. I didn’t want to be kissing Kevin Spacey. Come on! Lying there naked with rose petals?”
8. Perks of the Job
Kirsten’s high school prom was in 2000. She was then shooting the Virgin Suicides with Coppola. These two are so close that she actually borrowed a Galliano gown from Sofia so she would wear it on the night of her prom.
That was the same dress that Sofia wore at The Golden Globes!
9. First Screen Kiss
It turns out, Dunst has a lot of famous firsts. Her first kiss on screen was none other than Brad Pitt!
10. Young Love
Her and Jake Gyllenhall dated between 2002 and 2006. They were introduced by Maggie Gyllenhall.
11. The Girl Next Door
Kirsten ended up playing Mary Jane Watson in Spider-Man after both Kate Hudson and Alicia Witt turned down the role!
12. First-Hand Experience
Cast specifically for her experience with depression in 2008, Dunst absolutely excelled in Lars Von Trier’s Melancholia.
13. Another Romance
Pictured below at the 2016 Golden Globes, Dunst and On the Road co-star Garrett Hedlund began dating in 2012. They split shortly after the Golden Globes.
14. The One?
Shortly, after her fall out with Hedlund, Kirsten started dating another co-star. This time it was Fargo colleague Jesse Plemons.
Moreover, it seems like this time around it’s the case of a true love since the couple got engaged late 2016!
15. Festive Traditions
Come Christmas time, Dunst receives a coconut cake from Tom Cruise every year. This is a tradition ever since they appeared together in the Vampire Interviews! This is also known as “The Cruise Cake”
16. Breathing Royalty
Coppola and Dunst joined forces one more time in 2006 for Marie Antoinette. It was as if the role was specifically written with Dunst in mind. The whole movie was top notch! For it to be that way, she underwent extensive preparations.
“You breathe differently in those dresses; you move in a special way,” she explained. To prepare herself for the famous balcony scene, Kirsten walked through the Palace of Versailles alone at night. “I could look in those mirrors. Be still in myself. Feel my place in that house.”
