Okay, I know you’ve had it with these types of life hacks, like how to paint your nails correctly, or how to clean effortlessly. You may know them by heart, but it’s a matter of discussion if you will apply them in reality. Although useful, these hacks are a skill to master. But what about the people in the past? Do you think they had to rely on certain life hacks to ease their way of living and daily activities? It may seem odd to you, but in the early 1900s, people had hacks they read on cigarette boxes! The New York Public Library has digitized 100 “how to do it” cards found in cigarette boxes over 100 years ago, and the tips they give are indeed practical! These are so good that millennials reading this might want to take notes.

Back in the day, cigarette cards were popular collectibles, as they displayed photos of celebrities, advertisements, and so much more. Gallaher cigarettes, a UK-founded tobacco company that was once the largest in the world, decided to print a series of helpful how-tos on their cards. These ranged from mundane tasks (boiling potatoes) to unlikely scenarios (stopping a runaway horse). They are insanely smart, practical and hilarious! Most of them are very clever, though, like how to make a fire extinguisher at home. The entire set of life hacks is now part of the NYPL’s George Arents Collection.
